from the Early Notebooks

notebook 2
winter 1869 - spring 1870

Christianity, originally a matter of talent, had to be democratised.  The slow struggle to become a world religion, whereby everything profound, esoteric, accessible to the talented individual was extirpated. - This also brought back optimism, without which a world religion cannot keep going.  Purgatory and κατάστασις [katastasis - institution]  are its creations.
