A Stanza for Padraic Colum
Across the Door...
At three in the morning you wake up,
harnessing horses, rolling barrells,
the oinking of pigs waxes over your sleep,
again laughing, coughing, vomiting, laughing,
the moon climbs through the window, snorting horses,
slamming of the cellar door, seven or eight people
from another shore,
Zell, Caliban, the innkeeper, a burst of laughter, shouting,
galloping....
Soon the sled is on the frozen lake,
soon but a line is on the lake,
soon but a white line is on the lake...
